Kiruna

Kiruna

Kiruna is a decanter designed as part of a research project: Objects with Meaningful Associations. In this project, I interviewed individuals and designed personalised products inspired by their life stories. These products contain meaningful associations to significant aspects of the user's past, present and anticipated future.

when I mastered skiing for the first time, when I made it down an American mountain without falling down
— Alex, 56

Alex's valued possessions reflected his love for "objects of art" as he described his appreciation for the craftsmanship involved and the stories they often reflect. I drew inspiration from Alex's description of himself as "much more a winter person than a summer person" and the significant experience of skiing in America. Kiruna uses imagery of snowy mountains beneath a clear blue sky with indentations made to reflect the snow tracks created by skiers.

Alex's life STORY

Alex is a 56-year-old father of three with a career in IT sales and client management, living with his partner near the northern beaches of Sydney. His upbringing was fickle as his family moved around Australia every few years to follow his father's professional role in the army. This "nomadic" lifestyle continued in his adult life as he lived and worked in various countries across the globe and developed a passion for travel. Alex looks forward to retirement, freeing time for writing, travelling and being a pro-active granddad.
